ERP for the Rest of Life Sciences
Why SAP Cloud ERP deserves a second look from pre-commercial and early commercial life sciences companies
There is a perception that follows SAP Cloud ERP into almost every life sciences conversation. It usually surfaces early – sometimes in the first meeting or before the first meeting – already baked into the assumptions a leadership team brings to the table.
The perception goes something like this: SAP is an enterprise platform built for large, complex organizations. Life sciences companies need validated, highly regulated environments. SAP Cloud ERP is a standardized public cloud product. Therefore, SAP Cloud ERP is not the right fit for life sciences.
It is a logical-sounding argument. It is also – for a significant and growing segment of life sciences companies – wrong… or at least far more nuanced than that framing suggests.
This article is for the pre-commercial biotech that has been told SAP Cloud ERP isn’t an option. It is for the early commercial life sciences company running its operations on spreadsheets and a patchwork of disconnected tools, wondering whether there is a better path that doesn’t require a two-year implementation program and a validation budget that dwarfs the information technology (IT) department’s annual spend. And it is an honest look at where SAP Cloud ERP genuinely fits for life sciences today (and where it doesn’t).
If you are new to SAP Cloud ERP and want a fast, accessible introduction to what the platform is and why it matters for growing businesses, start here: What Is SAP Cloud ERP? Everything You Need to Know in 60 Seconds.
Where the perception originates (and why it made sense)
SAP’s reputation in life sciences was built on SAP Enterprise Central Component (ECC) and S/4 Private Cloud – heavily customized, on-premise or private cloud environments built to meet the compliance, validation, and regulatory requirements of large pharmaceutical and medical device companies. Those deployments were multiyear programs with significant validation overhead and price tags that reflected the complexity involved.
For large, fully commercial life sciences companies with complex manufacturing, full GxP validation requirements, and multi-country regulatory submissions, that model still exists (and for good reason). SAP Cloud ERP public cloud is not the right answer for every one of those situations today.
But that is not the only life sciences company that exists. And it is not the only life sciences ERP story worth telling.
What’s changed
SAP Cloud ERP public cloud has matured significantly. It is a robust, artificial-intelligence (AI)-embedded ERP foundation delivering finance, procurement, inventory, supply chain, and commercial operations on a platform that updates twice a year, requires no infrastructure management, and is designed for fit-to-standard deployment.
For pre-commercial and early commercial life sciences companies, this matters. These organizations need enterprise-grade controls such as financial discipline, procurement traceability, batch and lot visibility, and segregation of duties, but do not yet need the full weight of a validated GxP environment. They need to get operational quickly – on a budget that fits their stage and a platform that can grow with them.
SAP Cloud ERP public cloud, deployed correctly, meets that brief. Answerthink® has done it (several times).
What we’ve seen in practice
One life sciences customer needed finance and procurement controls capable of withstanding Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) scrutiny across two countries and against a hard deadline. We delivered in 20 weeks. Another was carrying a heavily customized legacy ERP that was slowing everything down, including month-end close. They moved to SAP Cloud ERP and cut their close time in half.
Both examples prove that the platform works for life sciences when the scope is right and the implementation team understands the space. The question was never really whether SAP Cloud ERP could handle life sciences. It was whether there was a right-sized, right-priced entry point for companies that aren’t global enterprises.
That is the question EzFast Start™ Life Sciences was built to answer.
Introducing EZFast Start™ Life Sciences
EzFast Start™ Life Sciences is Answerthink’s SAP qualified partner packaged solution built specifically for pre-commercial and early commercial life sciences companies with outsourced supply chains – fixed-price, fixed-scope and live in 12 weeks, without the overhead of a full GxP validation program in initial scope.
The scope covers what companies at this stage need: financial controls and faster close, procurement discipline with three-way match, full batch and lot traceability, subcontracting visibility, sales and revenue reporting, and third-party logistics (3PL)-ready integration support. Everything is delivered with master data setup, baseline migration, security, testing, training and time-boxed hypercare included.

Is EzFast Start™ Life Sciences right for you?
EzFast Start™ Life Sciences is purpose-built for a specific kind of organization. It is designed for companies that are:
- Pre-commercial or early commercial stage with an outsourced supply chain model
- Single legal entity or light multi-entity
- Running with up to 25 named users at go-live
- Managing limited integration complexity, with potential 3PL connectivity
- In need of operational traceability and financial controls, but not a fully validated GxP environment from day one
- Committed to a fit-to-standard mindset and a fast path to value (read more about what that means here: Building a Cloud Mindset in 2026. Six Practical Steps for ERP Success)
It is not designed for organizations requiring full GxP compliance and system validation in initial scope, complex direct manufacturing environments, or heavy customization and large historical data migration needs. For those organizations, a different program is the right starting point.
Build a foundation to scale
SAP Cloud ERP is not the right answer for every life sciences company. But the assumption that it cannot work for life sciences is a misconception that is costing pre-commercial and early commercial organizations real time and real options.
If you need financial control, procurement discipline, batch traceability and supply chain visibility (on a timeline and budget that fits where you are today), EzFast Start™ Life Sciences was built for you. And when you are ready to grow beyond that foundation, the path forward into GxP-aligned quality management, advanced planning, direct manufacturing and broader commercial operations is already waiting on the same clean core.
